Yoga has long been used to promote fitness of body and mind. Through gentle movements called asanas, yoga can help relieve stress and keep the body and mind fit and well. It helps strengthen our awareness and enjoyment of the present moment, teaching us to transcend the tensions and anxieties of life. Yoga is a journey of inner peace and self realization that can help us with all aspects of our lives.

Hatha yoga is a process through which purification and control of the body takes place. There exists within everyone a place of balanced awareness that is ours to tap into. With its origins in ancient India, yoga is a timeless practical science which has evolved over thousands of years. It helps maintain physical, emotional, mental and spiritual health through asanas, deep relaxation and breath control techniques known as pranayama.

The history of Yoga in India goes back as far as 2500bc. The yogic masters of old were well aware of the benefits of yoga and its teachings have been passed from teacher to pupil since then, so that everyone can access through themselves a greater sense of being and high life state.

Yoga is mostly known for its postures, although there are many more aspects of this amazing science. Combined with breath-work, the asana movements flow one into another and will strengthen, stretch and tone the body, revitalising and energising the whole system whilst breathing into and working particular muscle groups. Asanas can release the muscle tension caused by hours of sitting at a desk.

Hatha yoga can provide a way for people of any age to stay in shape and also develop balance, better coordination and self awareness. It renews, invigorates, and heals the body - stretching and toning the muscles, joints and spine and directing blood and oxygen to the internal organs.

Regular practice of hatha yoga can bring peace and happiness to the mind and improved health and relaxation to the body with its preventative and therapeutic benefits.

What to expect from a one to one hatha yoga session

If I have not seen you before I will first take a full medical history.

During a yoga session you will move through a number of asana poses which will be combined with breath-work, holding the poses for varying amounts of time and working in a sequenced order so muscle's are slowly warmed and evenly worked. You will do some eye movements known as “Netravyanamam”, that help to strengthen and tone the optic nerves.

There will also be a deep relaxation, known as”Yoga nidra”, towards the end of the session, where you will be asked to relax every part of the body, part by part. This has amazing benefits. We will usually finish the yoga session with some yogic breathing techniques known as ”pranayama”. Breathing deeply can improve vitality by increasing the amount of oxygen that reaches the brain. Control of the breath is vital to the control of the body and breath-work also encourages an inward focus which can help develop one's spirituality. We may also do a short meditation and spiritual chants at the beginning and end of the class.

You will always go at your own pace and will be encouraged to never over-strain your body, always remembering that the asana movements are done without any competition or expectation. During the session you are free to come out of the pose, relax and tune into yourself if you wish.
These yoga session are aimed at beginners or those who have been practising yoga for only a few years.

These one to one sessions can be at your own home or you can come to me and are 1 hour or 1 and half hours long.

Sometimes I may ask you to talk to your GP before arranging a treatment. Always make sure that you avoid alcohol for at least 5 hours before a treatment. Drink lots of water after a treatment as this will help with the removal of toxins.
